Valentine’s Day is all about ‘from the heart’, right? With that in mind, forget ideas of extravagant gifts, over-the-top floral arrangements and lavish boxes of chocolates (actually, chocolates are okay). Instead, we’ve put together a few sweet ways to mark the day that won’t break the bank.
My first stop for special occasion craft or ideas for handmade gifts is Martha Stewart. There are lots of simple Valentine’s Day crafts to inspire, from lollipop flowers and love heart teabags to some very cool ways to create secret Valentine’s messages (heart shaped glasses optional!).
Traditionally Valentine’s Day is all about hearts but there are lots of lovely and appropriate sentiments that can be shared minus the red and pink! As yellow is my favourite colour, I’ve turned to the classic song You Are My Sunshine, for Valentine’s inspiration. Tell someone that they are your sunshine with a gorgeous embroidered cushion from Etsy’s Amme & Neb, an up-cycled wooden sign from Kingston Creations or a simple letterpress print from Raw Art Letterpress (above).
After some ‘heartfelt’ toys? We love the LuvBots from Snow Machine (shown at the very top), the cute plush characters with subtle little hearts from Pretty Plush and the gorgeous knitted bears wearing Valentine’s jumpers from Pogo Shop.
For kids who want to wear their heart on their sleeve this Valentine’s Day, a t-shirt from Once Upon a Story is a must. There’s also tattoo heart onesies, cute ‘Be Mine’ onesies and ‘XO’ booties from Etsy that get the Valentine’s message across.
Lastly, for some grown-ups Valentine’s Day gifts, consider engraved pencils from The Carbon Crusader, ‘wood grain’ Kindle sleeves from Julie Meyer, incredible personalised QR code cufflinks for the geek in your life or a tiny, hand-embroidered love note from Cornflower Blue Studio.
