James May’s Lego House

When I was seven I spent a lot of time building with Lego. I always started my projects with building a house, but never on the scale of this! Built by James May (of Top Gear fame) this real-life Lego house is both a masterpiece and May’s dream come to life. May came up with the idea for a Lego house after a conversation with friends at the pub. They were talking about what they would have built with Lego as kids, if they had had enough bricks, simply because your imagination is generally bigger than the resource available!

The two-storey structure is built from Lego bricks, each made of 272 Lego pieces. Over three million ‘bricks’ were used to build the house which means in total over 816 million Lego pieces were used! All those Lego pieces were put together with the help of 1,200 volunteers who won tickets to be part of the event.

Located in the middle of Denbies vineyard, the Lego house includes a working bathroom with shower and toilet, a staircase and meets local planning regulations.

It was Lego down to the last detail. To celebrate the completion of the house, Denbies Wine Estate commissioned a magnum size bottle of its own wine, made out of Lego, to toast the builders.
