Think keepsake gifts and you might also think schmaltzy. But stick with Babyology this Mother’s Day and we’ll show you keepsakes with supreme style.

When jewellery and children’s artwork combine you will have something very special indeed and I’m not talking about a macaroni necklace made at kinder (although that is special in its own way). Earlier this year we reviewed the amazing pieces made by Formia Design. Designer Mia Van Beek creates superb earrings, pendants, charms and keyrings in silver, gold and titanium based on children’s drawings. Her interpretations of the drawings are spot on and I think any mum will be thrilled to own such a unique piece. Prices start at US$59.

Equally lovely are the colourful pieces from Kids With Crayons. Kids With Crayons offer many ways to show off your child’s artwork, from pretty fridge magnets and cards to badges and keyrings. For Mother’s Day though, you can’t go past the pendants. Submit your child’s artwork and your colour preference and Kids With Crayons will make a fantastic pendant or long necklace highlighted with carefully selected backing fabrics and patterns. Pendants are $25 and long necklaces are $28 – $35.

For something simple and elegant look no further than Koolaman Designs. The modern shapes of their silver jewellery include basic squares and circles to ‘dog tags’ and mini pendants and each is hand stamped with all the important ‘little’ details in your life. Prices range from $60 up to $200.

Pieces from LeKnockout are sure to be a talking point. LeKnockout creates jewellery from your children’s baby teeth. I’ll admit that at first I thought this was somewhat odd. But I have saved all of my children’s baby teeth which I’m sure many people will think is weird (I figured they went through so much pain getting them, I couldn’t just throw them out!). A necklace, charm or earrings from LeKnockout may prompt a few tooth fairy questions but will certainly be one-of-a-kind. Prices start from US$299.

There are many other ways to use children’s artwork to create a special keepsake. In the past we have reviewed the clever Crea lamps, the fantastic ArtEater books and canvas bags (above) from Stray Notions, all perfect for showing off mini-masterpieces. You can also combine artwork, photographs and a written account of special memories in a Blurb book (shown as a baby book below). It would be lovely to start a tradition of creating a family ‘Book of the Year’ combining your childrens’ drawings,  photos of special occasions and the everyday as well as memorable quotes and important dates. Prices start at just $16.95 for a full colour book of up to forty pages.

Let your children become part of the art with stunning, modern adaptations of the family tree. Family trees that are sure to take pride-of-place on the wall can be found at My Tree and Me (below) and Famille Summerbelle (shown at top). Finally, The Mother’s Book may not look like the most stylish gift (and we did promise style) but it is sure to be one of the most treasured keepsakes. Last Mother’s Day I bought this book for my mother, my mother-in-law and my grandmothers. It is a journal of sorts, but full of questions to be answered, spaces for treasured photographs and even a spot for best-loved family recipes. The book covers an enormous range of topics from ‘Who was your first kiss?’ through to ‘What does friendship mean to you and who are your great friends?’. The Mother’s Book promises to tell the story that matters most and I think it delivers that beautifully.
