Eloise and the Plaza Hotel

The Plaza Hotel in New York City is synonymous with classic style and luxury. For little girls in the know, The Plaza also equals Eloise. This reminds me a little of the Barbie store in Shanghai, it seems we are seeing a trend in these types of stores worldwide and I love it.

Eloise by Kay Thompson is the charming story of a six-year-old girl, Eloise, who lives at the Plaza with her British nanny, her dog and her turtle. Hotel living leads to all sorts of adventures and Eloise is an exciting and excitable heroine. First published in 1955, Eloise has generations of fans who can now live the life of their heroine, if only for an afternoon.

The Plaza Hotel has recently opened an Eloise shop. Decorated in Eloise’s signature pink and black, the shop boasts a Fashion Room, a Library Room, a Tea Room and a Salon. Mini-Eloises can enjoy a story, take afternoon tea, plan their misadventures with the help of the concierge and even take etiquette lessons – all while enjoying ‘park views’.

If you are in New York, don’t miss the chance to ‘skibble’ in.

If you are heading over to the Big Apple any time soon, don’t forget to head over to another of our favourite stops Moomah and also check out our New York shopping guide for kids.

Katrina Whelen

Katrina studied planning and design, did the hard yards working in a big office building and then traded it all in for a relaxing (!) life at home with four children. She now fills her time with writing, completing a degree in genetics and taxiing her children around Melbourne to their various sporting commitments (not necessarily in that order).
