Christmas is all baubles and glitter and tinsel and sparkly things. Or at least it will be after you’ve thrown yourself into some fun festive crafting. Here’s a whole heap of easy Christmas craft ideas to try with the kids.

Grab some fancy duct tape, some empty tissue boxes and some glitter and go to town making a whole Christmas village for the kids to enjoy. They’re sure to have hours of fun making and then playing with their creations. You’ll find all the very easy-to-follow instructions to creating your own tissue box village over at Mer Mag.

Tis the season to be sparkly with some blinged-up Christmas tree art for the wall. Take one canvas, a stack of sequins and beads and these instructions from craft blog Whatever… and you’ll soon have an eye-catching work of art guaranteed to put a festive smile on everyone’s face.

Save the fragile baubles and decorations for another time and make your own kid-proof decorations for the tree this year. We like the simple monochromatic styling of these DIY tree decorations from over at I heart naptime, but you can make them as busy or as colourful as you like to suit your own tree decorating style. Or even put the skills from the previous craft activity to good use and add some sequins!

Now I don’t know about you, but to me nothing says Christmas like a glittery stegosaurus hanging from the tree. Find all the instructions to make your own herd of sparkly dinosaur or animal Christmas tree decorations at Curbly.

make your own snow

Of course, we don’t get snow in Australia at Christmas time. In fact, you’re more likely to spend an Aussie Christmas Day sweating it out in a pair of thongs with a cool cocktail in hand rather than a knitted scarf and mulled wine. But that doesn’t mean you can’t give the kids a white Christmas! Just head to the supermarket for some cornflour and shaving cream, then follow the super-easy instructions for making your own snow that we found at Paging Fun Mums. And presto, it will be snowball fights for the kids in the backyard at 10 paces, no matter how hot things get.

snowflake mobile wall hanging

Bring a little bit of Christmas cheer to the nursery with a pretty snowflake wall hanging that also makes the perfect over-the-cot mobile for baby. It’s from The Crafted Sparrow. These snowflakes are machine-cut, so picture perfect, but we quite like the idea of getting the kids to make their own the old-fashioned way, wonky cut-outs and all.

Now this one’s for my daughter, whose love of fairies transforms at Christmas-time into a love of Christmas angels. She’s going to love making her own angel – and personalising it with her own name – with this totes adorable free printable angel from Jenny Allsorts. Simply print out the angel and get the kids busy with some scissors and you’ll soon have an army of angels ready to be used as pretty place cards for Christmas lunch or to trim the tree. Another option, my daughter’s favourite, is to place the angel over a battery-operated tea light candle and let her bring a Christmas glow to the room.

Unleash your kids on these funny Christmas tree or Christmas star glasses and you’re guaranteed some hilarious holiday snapshots. This is a super easy Christmas craft project for preschoolers, but older kids will enjoy it just as much. Simply gather some markers, glue, glitter and perhaps some washi tape – along with the instructions from Picklebums – and you’re good to go.

Help them learn the names of Santa’s reindeer crew with this rather clever egg carton reindeer herd that we spotted over at The Well Nourished Nest. And just for the record, it’s Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. Rudolph optional.

diy cork santas

Of course, there can be no sleigh without Santa and I can’t go past these cute cork-made Santas that I spotted at Red Ted Art. Make one to accompany your sleigh or a whole slew to use as placemarkers for your Christmas table. Of course, if you want to make as many Santas as you see here, you’re going to require rather a generous outlay of corks, so make sure to invite all your friends and neighbours over for a festive drink! Otherwise it’s easy enough to adapt the instructions to make a Saint Nick collection using empty toilet rolls instead. Happy crafting and Merry Christmas!
