Thoughtful nurse’s handwritten note changes everything for struggling new mum

Note from nurse over scales (aimed at new mums)

When new mum Mariah Kaitlyn Herrera was navigating some difficult feelings about her changing postpartum body, a total ripper of a nurse gave her the compassionate, common-sense reminder she needed. She uploaded the details to Instagram and we wanted to share it here, because we know you’ll love the message.

A gentle reminder

“This scale will only tell you the numerical value of your gravitational pull. It will not tell you how beautiful you are, how much your friends and family love you, or how amazing you are!!” said a note above the scales at a new mother’s doctor’s office.

The woman in question, Mariah Kaitlyn, from Oregon in the US, is mum to 5-month-old Isaiah. She said she’d seen the note once before, and is convinced that the nurse’s words should be branded on every set of scales in the universe (although she’s not sure which nurse at her local clinic is responsible for the genius sentiment.)

Mariah Kaitlyn says she was in a pretty vulnerable state when she stumbled across the post-it.

“I had a terrible pregnancy, a complicated delivery and… it completely altered everything in my body,” Mariah Kaitlyn told Today.

The note this nurse left above the scales provided some much needed perspective at a time when the pressure is on for mums to conform to some pretty impossible standards – often set by complete strangers.

The pressure is on

Some postpartum health issues, combined with external pressures and anxiety, meant that Mariah Kaitlyn dreaded weighing herself at her postpartum check-ups.

The positive post-it reminded her that not only is her body weight just one part of the living-your-best-life equation, but that her amazing body was responsible for the fantastic little person she’d brought into the world (with a bit of help from her partner!) – and was the very thing her family was built on. What’s not to love about that?!

This much-needed shift in perspective lightened her emotional load and helped her focus on her excellent, life-making achievements.

So much better to celebrate our progress and strengths, rather than compare our unique selves to someone else, don’t you think?

“I walked out of the office feeling confident. I felt like a completely different person,” Mariah Kaitlyn said, proving that a few kind words from someone sensible and compassionate can make all the difference to someone’s day.

We send many virtual high-fives to this clever, note-leaving mystery nurse!

Literally only God knows how we made it through this year. And i dont say that lightly. They say the first year is the hardest and good grief it was! But here we are. With our beautiful little human. You are SUCH a good papa to isaiah. Hes lucky to have you, and im greatfull to have you. I know many fathers who dont do anything for their kids so it makes me appreciate even more every poopy diaper you change, every time you spend 20 minutes patting his butt to sleep, and when im having anxiety and cant handle myself so you take isaiah and tell me everything is gonna be okay. We are far from perfect. But i wouldnt change it💙 . . . . . . .#marriage #otherhalf #babydaddy #oneyear #struggle #fightforlove #hubby #love #happy
