When my babies were newborn I crept into the nursery at all hours of the day and night when they were sleeping to make sure I could see that little chest rise and fall, such was the fear of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS as we commonly refer to it.
I know I’m not alone in the constant checking and I’m thankful for the researchers of Berlin’s Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM for designing concepts to prevent such tragedy. With the aid of a flexible and stretchable circuit board embedded in a baby romper suit, enabling the monitoring of breathing in the chest and stomach areas, parents will be given a little peace of mind knowing that should their infant stop breathing they’ll be alerted immediately.
While this particular romper is still in the research and concept stages, would you use such a garment for your own piece of mind? For more information on sudden infant death syndrome, head on over to SIDS and Kids.

I am with Luisa. No I wouldn’t put an electronic circuit on my baby’s body. Especially wrapped around her little heart.
I was given an angelcare monitor with the pads for my 1st kid and only even fitted the monitor coz the pads wouldnt work through his mattress. This suit IS NOT to prevent SIDS it is to alert parents immediately if bub stops breathing – you still need to use common sense when putting bub down and checking on them never hurts! Both my kids 18 months and 4 1/2 started sleeping on their tummy soon as they could roll and are very restless sleepers so always kick off their covers. I checked often and didnt put toys with them etc but really you can only do so much and hope for the best!
I agree that this suit is no prevention, it is to alert you that baby stopped breathing during sleep so you can then attend to basic life support.
Personally, I wouldn’t use this suit, there are too many “things” out there these days. I just use common sense, I have followed the guidelines as best I can and my daughter is fine. Regards to those who have suffered through the loss of a child from SIDS.
I have used the angel care movement and sound monitor since my 2 yr old was born and I still check her at least once a night. She stopped breathing once at 4 weeks and we were petrified. After a sleep study etc they found no reason for the episode but I feel better knowing that if she stops breathing the alarm will wake us. We have bubs number 2 due in 4 months and I will definitely be using it for him. Not sure I would use the sleep suit though. I think the monitor works quite well when used properly and I never have anything in the cot up until they are 2 even then I remove it once they are sleeping.
