Do you have a sock monster in your house?

Do you have a sock monster in your house? We certainly do and he lives somewhere between the spot where my kids get undressed for the bath, and the laundry. Occasionally he also hides in the washing machine. We know he’s there because he eats socks – just one from each pair because he doesn’t like to overdo it.

Knowing that sock monsters are common household creatures, author and illustrator Lorna Freytag created Sock Monster, an interactive storybook app.

It’s a simple story about a hungry little sock monster. Follow him around the house as he gobbles, munches and chomps his way through all the socks. Kids should take note – the sock monster doesn’t like stinky socks!

Scared of monsters? Never fear, the Sock Monster is a cute, fuzzy little guy with a big, gap-toothed smile. Pleasingly, his fur changes colour and patterns to match the socks he’s just eaten, a detail that will delight kids.

The interactive elements of the book are simple and intuitive and the graphics are an excellent mix of photographs and animation. The book can be read by you or read to them (it’s narrated by kids with gentle Scottish accents – a novelty in itself!).

Sock Monster is created for children aged five years and under. It’s available via iTunes for $2.99. Alternatively, a printed book version will be available soon from Junoberry.

  1. Ours hide under the cot.

  2. We have now bought a lingerie bag to put little’s socks in to wash them. It won’t stop the “cot hiding spot” but at least there will be a safe spot to put the dirty ones in.
