Sleeping on a cloud – the Kumo Crib for newborns

Sleeping on a cloud the Kumo Crib for newborns

We just love a good designer crib loaded with creative flair and this one is all that.

It’s the Kumo Crib by Manami Keiji and Sora Design and it’s modelled on the concept of sleeping on a cloud, which is actually my mechanism for getting off to sleep on those now frequent pregnancy-induced sleepless nights. I imagine myself suspended high above the earth on a fluffy bed of softness and it soon soothes me to sleep.

Sora Design appears to be a fledgling company based in London and not a lot of information is available about the crib, but we thought you’d just love to see it anyway! It would make a show-stopping piece hung from the nursery’s ceiling.

  1. As someone who designs cribs and baby furniture, I’ll tell you this is clearly a design with absolutely no research behind it. There are about a dozen things on this piece that would make it illegal to sell (sharp edges, sidewall height, footholds, irregular shape, finger traps, structurally unsound).

Babies sleep on pillows on their side? Really?

Also, remind your child not to turn or move her head more than two inches lest she grind it into the confines or her sweet, cozy bassinet. And no growing either. You must stay under 22″ to fit in here.

What you’re looking at is a small model, probably 4-6″ long, laser cut out of masonite and with a baby Photoshopped into it to make it look bigger. If the designer made a prototype and tried to use it, he’d realize that placing something onto a hanging surface is really difficult as it tends to sway erratically. If that something is a wriggling baby, good luck.

There is an interesting notion here, that you could expand a flat surface into a 3D object for your child, but that is not what is done here.

At least it’s loaded with creative flair.

  2. No, however it would make a great fruit bowl

  3. More looks than practicality. It’s fabulous but finding sheets to git would be a nightmare.

  4. Thanks for your comment Matthew, I agree in that the crib size is perhaps not practical for a sleeping baby but certainly makes a creative statement.
