Update Fun Pod - safety in the kitchen

Furniture
Written by Mandi Gunsberger
02.02.2008

We mentioned this product back in December and we wanted to let you know the price has been reduced as on this month from $299 to $239, which is a huge saving.

The kitchen is a hazardous place, especially for babies and toddlers. We all want to include our children in food preparation - it's one of the great joys of life. Learning to prepare a meal, bake a cake, all the while sampling the results on the way, is a rite of passage that is fascinating to a child. Unfortunately our adult sized kitchens do not easily allow children to participate. This is where the Little Helper Fun Pod becomes an essential tool for family life!

Built as a long narrow box, your child stands on an adjustable platform, which elevates them to the perfect height for safe activities at your kitchen workbench. The top of the Fun Pod reaches chest height on children aged 12 months to approximately 5 years, preventing falls and injuries. It contains your child so you are free to use hot appliances without the worry of having to keep your eyes on your toddler's every move. They will be entertained with their own appropriate task, feel a part of the action and will be absolutely safe!

In your choice of groovy black, red or maple, the Fun Pod is available in Australia from The Product Store.

Update - Getting high on Italian design

Furniture

The humble highchair has certainly undergone a metamorphosis from it first humble beginnings of a tall chair with a safety bar across it.

Italian company Inglesina have come up with two very stylish chair designs in their Mhome range of baby interior products that are at the high end of the design spectrum.

The Zuma has quite a space age appearance perfect for modern interiors with great features such as 8 height options and 3 position reclining backrest whilst also being able to fold flat for storage.  The Club on the other hand is more simplistic in its styling and features and more suitable for older babies who are already able to sit up as there is no head support.

If you’re looking for a baby chaise longue, then they also offer the gorgeous Loft baby rocker which has similar design lines to the Zuma with on-off rocking motion and stylish colour choices.  It seem the only downside on the futuristic styling is that it doesn’t have any play attachments to entertain your child when they are awake - but then for some the rocking motion and a good view is enough.

The range also includes a Spa – no, not for you, the baby!  A baby bath and change table in one, it is ergonomically designed with sleek lines and available in the same 3 colours as the rest of the range – red, aqua and graphite.

We just got news that the Zuma has arrived in Australia and the other items will be here late January or early February. The Mhome collection will be distributed by Valiant Enterprises. Contact them on 03 9581 8000 or  This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it to locate your closest stockist. momentoItalia - memorable modern bedrooms...for kids

Furniture

We bought my son's first bed 6 months ago. If only I had seen the amazing array of Italian-designer children's furniture at momentoItalia! Such inspired, imaginative bed design is rarely brought to our far-off shores. I'd actually find it quite a task to choose between a spiral-bound notebook bed or sunshine yellow bunk for when a pal comes to stay.

MomentoItalia furniture pushes every single design button I possess. Clean lines, stunning form, colours that pop but are far from garish (did you see that violet bed?), and manufactured from high quality materials, it would be worth contacting an Italian reshipper to get one to Australia. Only thing is, that you'd have to be a parent that enjoys hosting sleepovers. Your children's friends won't be able to stay away with furniture like this to sleep on!

Italian modernist furniture at its very best, there's options for baby, toddler, child and right up to the transition into teenhood. Sophisticated and multifunctional beds with attached storage units and tables, trundles and headboards covered in removeable, washable fabric, there's a choice for children of all stages. The crib also becomes a single bed by pulling it apart and pushing it back together into a different configuration - no screws or conversion kits needed. Simple furniture, simply beautiful.

We herd about a very stylish elephant

Furniture

Charles and Ray Eames were fascinated by elephants and in 1945 designed a plywood version for use as a child’s toy and as a decorative interior object.  Unfortunately, these were never put into mass production – in actual fact only 2 were every produced, one still in the Eames family archives.

To celebrate Charles Eames 100th birthday in 2007, a very limited production run of elephants were made available for purchase.  Initially manufacturer Vitra produced red and natural plywood elephants, but unfortunately, the red have now sold out, but there are still some of the natural left.

If you fancy having something unique designed by Charles and Ray Eames, it won’t come cheap – US$2007 to be exact.  Although it may seem a lot for a child’s toy, see it more as a limited edition piece of mid-century sculptural design, and the price may be more palatable!  At that price, I don’t think I would be letting my kids anywhere near it!

Available direct from Eames Office Gallery and Store, you will have to email them direct in regards to shipping.

Toddler tables that fall to pieces!

We love Etsy retailers for always coming up with something a bit different from what we all see in the shops.

Edessedesigns have designed 2 very unique (and patented) play tables.  Their Puzzle table is designed as a big jigsaw piece that is actually able to be joined together if you buy more than one.  With their interesting shapes and bright colours they will certainly make a bold statement in your home and provide added interest for your child.  As an incentive to enlarge your table area, if you buy a second table to add on, they will take US$100 off the price.  Great if you have more than one child as they can each have their own and work either separately or together.  Available in red, orange, blue and yellow for US$325.

Another fun idea they have come up with is the Orange Slice table.  Designed to look like a cross section of orange cut through the middle, the bright citrus orange will add a further element of fun to your playroom.  The grooves in the tabletop may also come in handy to keep pencils and crayons off the floor – an added bonus!  Prices at US$425

Available for shipping internationally, email edessedesigns direct for shipping options to Australia.
