During the school holidays we discovered way at the back of a cupboard, the long forgotten Kmart cake pop maker. In true school holiday spirit, we decided to get it out and give it another whirl to make some pretty simple cake balls. They look pretty special on any party table and they’re a nice way to have a taste of cake without committing to eating a giant wedge of it.

Dust off that cake pop maker, Babyologists, and get ready to find sprinkles for days!

Chocolate cake pops ingredients

  • Chocolate cake mix ingredients
  • 120g butter, roughly chopped
  • 2 eggs
  • 100g full cream milk
  • 120g caster sugar
  • 120g self-raising flour
  • 30g cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Cake pop icing ingredients
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1½ cups icing sugar

Method

I’m no Bakerella, so I cut corners all the way to make these sprinkly gems – and so can you. I’ve used my Thermomix for a quick basic chocolate cake mixture, but I’ll give instructions for non-Thermomix users also.

  • Place the butter into the Thermomix Bowl and melt for 2 minutes/60°/speed 4. Regular method: Melt the butter and pour into a large mixing bowl.
  • Add all remaining ingredients and mix 20 seconds/speed 5. Regular method: Add eggs to the melted butter and combine with electric beaters. Add the dry ingredients and mix to combine, gradually adding the milk until all combined.
  • Heat the cake pop maker and err on the side of caution by giving it a spritz with cooking oil spray.
  • Using a piping bag or a spoon, fill each hole with cake mix. Let them cook for 4 to 5 minutes (or as suggested by manufacturer instructions).
  • Once your cake balls have cooled completely, it’s icing time. Prepare your icing by sifting the cocoa and icing sugar in a bowl and adding enough water to make the icing quite wet – you want it around the same consistency as thickened cream.
  • Dip each ball into the icing and roll it around the inside of the bowl to remove as much icing as you can before dipping it in the sprinkles (otherwise you just get globs of icing in your sprinkles). Roll in the sprinkles and gently place back on the rack to dry.

Notes

  • This recipe using the Kmart cake pop maker makes about 36 cake balls.
  • Leave them as is or stick a lollipop stick in them to make cake pops, they’re sure to be a hit with the kids at your next gathering!
