My kids consider the ultimate birthday cake to be an ice cream cake. This makes for a happy situation for me because ice cream cakes are generally ‘outsourced’ (baking is not my forte).
Pitted with craters, the frozen spherical moons are available (in America) in two luscious flavour combinations – the white moon is filled with a pistachio biscuit base, layers of macadamia nut ice cream and meringue and a coating of raspberry ice cream. The orange moon (the Harvest Moon) includes layers of crunchy chocolate, nutty ice cream and salted caramel, finished with coating of vanilla ice cream.
The Ice Moons are moulded in two separate parts and then put together. The concept for a spherical ice cream moon was inspired by a combination of Georges Méliès’ 1902 silent film Le Voyage dans la Lune, a Bollywood song, the relief work of Armenian surrealist Léon Tutundjian and the near-spherical shapes of traditional ice cream bombes.
All I can say is ‘fly me to the moon’ (and that I wish they were available in Australia)!
