Everywhere I turn, people seem to making ‘whoopie’. Whoopie pies, that is.
Cupcakes are so last year and cake pops, last month. Right now, it’s all about the whoopie pie.
There are dozens of variations on flavours and fillings however the classic whoopie pie recipe is two smallish rounds of chocolate cake sandwiched together with vanilla cream or buttercream icing. It’s like the less sophisticated cousin of the macaroon and the relaxed chum of the cupcake.
Whoopie pies originated in the US – it’s unclear whether bakers in Maine or bakers in Pennsylvania’s Amish country can claim them as their own but either way these delicious morsels are the latest, most desirable cake treat.
