Pantone, surely the most authoritative word on colour matching, recently launched a new subscription service, Pantoneview, that alerts you to on-trend colours to ‘inform and inspire your colour decisions’. Although I have no need for such a service, I’m sorely tempted to sign up – call it ‘colour curiosity’.

For babies and toddlers with colour curiosity, some new releases by Pantone are sure to appeal.

First up, gorgeous Pantone: Colour Cards. There are eighteen flashcards in the set, made up of two tones of each of the nine basic colours. With a solid colour on one side of the card and a modern, illustrated pattern of animals or objects in shades of the same colour family on the other, the cards are both educational and beautiful to look at. Colours include Shark Grey, Grasshopper Green and Duckling Yellow – the challenge for children is to look at the illustrations and pick out which shade is Shark Grey, Grasshopper Green, Duckling Yellow and so forth.

Also new is Pantone: Box of Colour, a set of six small, chunky board books, one for each of red, yellow, green, purple, orange and blue. Each book includes durable die cut-outs of familiar objects against various shades of each colour. Simple text cues parents and children to label objects and observe lighter and darker shades of the same colour.

Both the flashcards and the books are suitable for children aged one year and over and are available from Book Depository. For grown-ups with colour curiosity, check out Pantoneview.

Children’s imaginations are wonderful, magical things. They can conjure castles in the sky, monsters under the bed… and imaginary friends.

Max & George, written by Cori Brooke and illustrated by Sue deGennaro, is a story about a little boy, Max, and his imaginary friend, George. George lives in windows.

“House windows and car windows. Train windows and shop windows. Max was never lonely as long as he had a window.”

The best thing about George was that he felt the same way as Max about all sorts of things (fancy that?!). So when Max is feeling a little apprehensive about starting school, George is there, in the school window, to keep him company.

“One afternoon Max thought George seemed especially jittery and nervous. Max was also feeling pretty nervous. He was starting school in a few days.”

But what happens when Max meets some ‘real life’ friends in the school playground?

Ultimately, Max makes friends with other kids and stops looking in windows. I actually found the end of this story quite poignant – an important part of growing up is giving away imaginary friends and security blankets but it doesn’t mean it’s not a teensy bit sad!

This is a terrific book for kids who are a little anxious about new situations and strikes a good balance between holding onto familiar comforts and facing new experiences. Kids avoiding giving up their security blanket or similar will happily note that on the last page of this story, Max is not completely without George.

Mention must be made of deGennaro’s delicate, thoughtful illustrations. She has captured the relationship between Max and George beautifully, with each character a perfect, expressive ‘mirror’ of the other.

Max & George is suitable for children aged three years and over and can be found online at Penguin Australia.

A school curriculum based around Lego? Bring it on, says my seven-year-old!

It’s billed as the world’s first ‘Lego school’, although it’s a bit more serious than that sounds. You may have visions of a school environment not unlike the colourful Lego hotel and school days filled with building and brick-work. However, while exercising creativity and imagination underpins much of the curriculum at the International School of Billund, the school will also incorporate Denmark’s state education system requirements with an International Baccalaureate curriculum framework. The curriculum is being developed for students aged three to sixteen years old.

So what does a curriculum based around Lego really look like? The Lego System is characterised by ‘playful’ learning – allowing students to immerse themselves in what they are doing, explore ideas, tinker, make and re-make things. In addition, the Lego System incorporates ‘Systematic Creativity’ – a combination of logic and reasoning with playfulness and imagination.

Interestingly, the school was initiated by the Lego Foundation, as a way of attracting highly-qualified international employees to Denmark (and more specifically to the LEGO Group as well as to other companies in the Billund area). In times when education is often left off the agenda, it’s impressive to see a school as a prominent part of social and economic planning.

The International School of Billund opens in August this year. The school is currently accepting applications.

Mountain Buggy fans, adjust your three-wheeled thinking.

Mountain Buggy, synonymous with the three-wheeled pram that can handle ‘off-road’ conditions, is taking a change-of-pace with the brand new Mountain Buggy Cosmopolitan.

The Cosmopolitan stays true to Mountain Buggy’s history – first-class suspension for a smooth ride, durable frame and a simple and easy fold system – but incorporates a four-wheel drive and a three-position seat – recline, forward or rear-facing.

So the big news is four wheels. Mountain Buggy have used Aerotech tyres, a puncture-proof blend of EVA and rubber, ensuring durability and a smooth ride for your baby. With the push of a button (literally), the front wheels transition smoothly from fixed to swivel, essential for manoeuvrability. Combined with Mountain Buggy’s superior suspension engineering, the Cosmopolitan allows you to tackle kerbs with ease.

There’s much to like about the Cosmopolitan’s three seat positions. The main seat is forward or rear facing and converts to a full carrycot with a few simple adjustments. This means that the pram truly takes a baby from birth onwards without the need for buying additional extras.

Other appealing features include a one pedal foot park brake that is activated with ease; straightforward fold and unfold (my favourite feature of my Mountain Buggy – there’s no ‘knack’, you simply fold and unfold in one simple move); a huge basket; and a five-point harness with two-button release that will keep even the most skilled escape-artists strapped in.

The Cosmopolitan is available in three colours – chilli, turquoise and flint (a slick stone and denim combination), combined with a brushed matte aluminum finish. It retails for $799. Shop online or find a retailer directly through Mountain Buggy.

You can never be armed with too much information when it comes to choosing car seats for your children. Click through to find out what this innovative brand has to offer in the way of safe travel for brand new babies, through to older children.

When pregnant with my first child I was so overwhelmed with the car seat options, I simply asked our local baby store owner which car seat is the safest. Full stop. And without hesitation he led me to the Britax Safe-n-Sound section. I purchased a Safe-n-Sound capsule then and there, and when I became pregnant with my second child two years later, I knew exactly what to purchase. I’ve never regretted those purchases, in fact I’ve recommended Safe-n-Sound car seats to anyone who will listen. I believe a safe car seat is the most important purchase you can make as a new parent, so here’s the low down on what Britax has to offer.

The Safe-n-Sound Compaq is a great option for those with smaller cars. It can be used for newborns, and will last until the child is four. It can be used rearward facing for babies from birth until they’re about twelve months old, or until their shoulders reach the Lower Shoulder Height Marker. It can then be used as a forward facing seat from about twelve months old until the child is four. The slim design makes it perfect for compact cars, where the front seats tend to be in close proximity to the rear seats.

The safety of the seats comes from its deep side wings, which are really important for side impact protection. It also includes a layer that will absorb energy in a crash. The Compaq also has the Safe-n-Sound sliding retractable stabilising bar to prevent the child from coming in contact with the vehicle seat in a head-on crash (whilst in the rearward position).

One of the clever features is the three recline positions, which includes an upright position, when the seat is in forward facing mode. It’s just awful watching a sleepy little head constantly rolling forward, so being able to recline the seat a little is a bonus on long trips. The Push Button adjusters in these seats are fantastic. If your child happens to be wearing something a little bulkier than usual, it’s so handy to just press the button and loosen the straps a fraction to ensure they fit correctly.

If you’re starting off with a baby capsule (as I did) the next step in car seats is the Safe-n-Sound Maxi Rider AHR Easy Adjust. This model is suitable for children from six months through to eight years, and having purchased two of the previous models in this range, I can highly recommend them. It can be used in forward facing mode from six months through to four years using the in-built harness. It can then be used as a Booster Seat with a lap-sash seat belt or child harness and lap or lap sash seat belt – a child harness must be used in a position with a lap-only seat belt.

The latest version of this car seat has some nifty features that make adjusting a breeze, like the Easy Adjust Headrest, which means it can be adjusted when the seat is installed. Just by pulling a lever the shoulder straps can be repositioned. It also has a sanity-saving EZ-Buckle System which keeps the harness buckles from disappearing under little bottoms when children first get into the seat.

Safety-wise, in Booster seat mode the Safe-n-Sound Slideguard clip stops the child slumping and the lap belt rising. I must admit having purchased the Tilt And Adjust model of this seat, I’m very envious to discover this new version includes speakers in the headrest – my boys would adore this! But they are very happy with the two rotating cup holders and arm rests in their Safe-n-Sound car seats, which make them feel very grown-up.

Britax also manufacture the Safe-n-Sound Encore 10, which is a booster for children from about four years old through to 10 years. These car seats are also packed with safety features, including Side Impact Cushion Technology, which Britax says maximises head protection by reducing side impact forces. This seat also has Expandable Side Wings to provide some support when children fall asleep and tend to slump. The Expandable Seat grows with the child and can be extended a further 70mm in length. The seat also has nine height adjustments, and speakers in the headrest. Visit Britax to find your nearest retailer.

A nursery as visually delicious as this couldn’t possible be a fluke, or an accidental stroke of design genius. No, this nursery has the touch of a mum who knows exactly what she’s doing when it comes to interior styling.

Welcome to the darling abode of Sunday, a rather lucky young lady, who has her mum – interior stylist and props purchaser Briar Stanley to thank for her beautiful surrounds.

Here’s what Briar had to say about styling her own daughter’s first room:

Decorating the baby’s bedroom was one of my most enjoyable styling projects ever. I spent about four months putting it together slowly, purchasing things along the way. As with most of my styling projects, I started off with a mood board to get the look and feel I was after, and worked out early on the colour we planned on painting the room – Taubmans ‘Inverness’. Although we knew we were having a girl, I was keen to make a bold, fun and colourful space that wasn’t too girly. I was also conscious of working to a strict budget.

You hear that? This gorgeous room was created on a budget! And we won’t leave you hanging – here are some of the clever ways that Briar pinched her pennies while creating the nursery:

The vintage bookshelf was purchased from a thrift shop for $50 – and became as good as new with a coat of primer and Taubmans Peach Orchid.

I have always loved the 1963 Enzo Mari Red Apple screenprint. Budget wouldn’t allow for me to purchase the real thing (£220), so I painted my own version on canvas.

The vintage change table was from Gumtree for $40 – I gave it a good clean and re-painted it white.

The pendant light is the Foto from Ikea. I then spray painted it with White Knight ‘Rust Guard’ – the perfect matt grey in my opinion.

I created a giant confetti project from Beci Orpin’s book ‘Find & Keep’. I used more durable cardboard rather than paper.

My mum is very crafty, and made a collection of soft toys (critters), crocheted blankets and knitted clothes for the baby while I was pregnant.

A large amount of vintage books and toys were purchased at thrift shops along the way during my pregnancy. I love the mix of old and new items, making it a truly eclectic space.

I painted one wall panel in black chalkboard paint so when Sunday is older she will have her own wall to ‘grafitti’ with chalk. In the meantime, I have drawn my own whimsical illustrations.

One of the most beautiful pieces in the entire nursery, in my opinion, is the framed French Navy card, on which Briar had the doctor secretly write down the sex of the baby, and was later opened in private.

And here’s where to source some of the other brilliant and bold items in Sunday’s nursery:

Knowing what and how much to feed children can be a guessing game. I know I’m guilty of piling my children’s plates high with food, which overwhelms them and leaves me uncertain as to how much they’ve actually eaten. Have a look at this great product that aims to take some of the guess work out of offering up balanced meals to children.

The Portion Plate works in two ways. It makes meal times a little more fun for kids, and helps parents portion out a meal so that children are meeting their nutritional goals. The melamine plate features the latest dietary guidelines, and shows just how much of a meal should be dedicated to fruits and vegetables, grains and protein.

Likewise the Eat A Rainbow Placemat is all about educating children and parents about eating a variety of fruits and vegetables daily. It’s made from linen cotton canvas and can easily be wiped clean. The Portion Plate costs US$18 and the placemat is US$15 from Georgie Porgie, however it does appear they only ship within the USA, so you may need the assistance of a re-shipper.

When you have a sick child, those every day things that other families take for granted sometimes become dreams and hopes that always seem just out of reach. Things like going for a walk to the park, cuddles in bed in the morning, sharing a big stack of homemade pancakes for breakfast and dancing around the living room in your pjs. And then there are birthdays.

Chronic illness meant little Ruby had already spent more than seven months of her young life in hospital when it came time to celebrate her second birthday, so mum Rebecca crossed her fingers (and everything else) that her daughter would be well enough to be home on the day and threw herself into the planning. It was as much to provide a distraction from the heartache of Ruby’s illness and ongoing hospital treatment for the entire family, including big brother Jack, as for the party itself.

Rebecca initially chose a rainbow theme for the celebration, but had no luck finding an invitation she liked. So, undaunted, she dumped the rainbow and went with rainbow-inspired bright colours instead, helped along by an entire collection of customised printables found over at Etsy’s Pretty Girl Designs, including those hot pink and chevron chocolate bar wrappers.

Tissue paper pompoms and polkadot lanterns that dangled over the lollipop and love hearts sweets table (pictured top) came from Specklefarm, while the chevron loot bags, bright paper straws and lollipop candle came from Hey Yo Yo. Those plastic drink bottles – more toddler-friendly than the ultra-popular mini glass bottles spotted at just about every party these days – were a Bon Bon Boutique find.

Now how’s this for dedication. Rebecca wanted little chocolate hearts as favours for the grown-ups, but rather than opting for ready-made hearts, she made them herself and handwrapped each one individually in foil paper found at Spotlight to match the colours of the party theme. Ah, a mum after my own party-mad heart!

Ruby’s illness means she can’t eat or drink normally and the plucky toddler instead is fed through a tube, making planning a party menu a rather bittersweet experience for Rebecca. She crammed it with all manner of party treats that she hopes her daughter will get to try for herself one day – chocolate crackles, marshmallow pops, jelly slice, coconut balls, honey joys and heart-shaped fairy bread.

While Ruby couldn’t eat the birthday cake, it sure provided a feast for her eyes! Resplendent on the outside with rows and rows of sugar hearts placed just so, it had bright rainbow layers inside and came from Bell’s Cakes in Geelong, as did the buttercream-topped cupcakes. The pretty plates and wooden cutlery, painstakingly handstamped to match by Rebecca, came from Sweet Style.

Now please join us in two great big cheers for the brave birthday girl and her equally brave mumma! Our birthday wish to your family, from the very bottom of our hearts, is that the doctors will soon be able to find a cure for Ruby’s illness so that you can get back to doing all those wonderfully mundane things that other families so often take for granted.

Want to share your child’s wow-worthy party with us? Then just fill in the Show us your party form on our contacts page. While we can’t reply to every email, we’ll certainly let you know if your party is chosen to be showcased on Babyology. We can’t wait to hear from you and look forward to seeing your amazing parties!

Children’s clothing might not be a project you’d expect to find on Kickstarter (an online pledge system for funding creative projects) but here’s a clothing collection with a difference.

US designers Ashlie Kodsy and Erica Murphy have created Nula, a children’s clothing label where the emphasis is on high-quality pieces that are designed to last a long time. Nula pieces go beyond a season’s wear. Instead, Kodsy and Murphy have designed styles that fit for three years by adjusting for growing kids. The designers hope that Nula will give parents the choice to buy fewer, better quality things and in doing so, consume less.

The Nula launch collection is styled for girls aged two to eight years and includes reversible skirts in sublime cherry prints, playful tiered tops, a jumpsuit, shorts and a very clever adjustable tiered dress that can be worn four ways. My favourite piece is the simple Tyler Dress that can be shortened or lengthened by simply ‘scrunching’ the hem – I wish it came in grown-up sizes!

Want to be the first with Nula in your daughter’s wardrobe? Get behind the Nula Kickstarter project, with pledges ranging from US$28 to $295.
