Something tells me that if Carrie Bradshaw had ever become a mother, Oscar de la Renta’s new children’s line would have been atop her baby shower registry. Back in the real world, I anticipate that Victoria Beckham and Rachel Zoe may be ordering one of everything.

The fabulous Oscar de la Renta is the latest in a long line of designers to branch out into a children’s line. He’s well-known and respected for creating limited-edition children’s clothing to raise money for charity – but this latest venture has the fashion world abuzz. And rightly so – if it’s pretty and girly you want, this collection has it, if it’s sophisticated and stylish, of course there’s plenty to suit your taste.

Just don’t expect any over-the-top, slick catwalk styling in this mini line. The word from the de la Renta camp is that they want children to look like children, and therefore have created pieces suited to the age group they’re designed for.

The girl’s dresses are floral and fun, with smocking detail and full skirts. The boys’ collection is very heavily influenced by checks and stripes in bright colours – which feature on just about everything from shorts to ties and blazers. The Spring/Summer boys’ collection has a sailor-style feel, perfect for a day’s yachting.

There are rompers for the small set (featuring mother-of-pearl buttons), starting at sizes to suit eighteen month olds, up to clothing for children aged to fourteen years. The designer garments, of course, come with a designer price tag. Rompers are US$195, while dresses start at $155.

Oscar de la Renta doesn’t ship outside of the US, but the online personal shopping service will guide you through international shipping and purchasing options.
