These children’s shoes are a labour of love, and created using a unique technique where the leather is tanned in wooden barrels without the use of chemicals. Read on to discover more on this incredible footwear brand.

Belgian shoe designer Nathalie Verlinden dreamed of creating beautiful shoes when she was a teenager, but her journey to becoming a designer of beautiful footwear was a long one. She studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Antwerp, and started to work as an interior designer. But that passion for shoes kept niggling at her.

So she headed to Indonesia, where she began to pursue her dream, which ultimately resulted in an avante-garde shoe brand which drew a following in several nations across the globe.

Still not satisfied, Nathalie took further inspiration from the Marche region of Italy, the home of artisan shoemaking. And this is where she designs her beautiful footwear – for children, men and women. She draws inspiration from her natural surroundings, using eco-friendly materials in her shoemaking – like leather, wood, cotton and cork.

So here’s the really interesting part – the leather is “vegetally” tanned in wooden barrels, no chemicals involved. Used to tan the hides are baths of trunk, rind, chestnut and mimosa extracts. The leather is hung to dry naturally, before being polished with amber stone.

What results is the most sublime footwear, which has been created using knowledge passed down through generations. The shoes and boots are upwards of €100 and can be purchased directly from Nathalie Verlinden.
