Don’t have a daughter? Then look away right now or risk becoming very jealous indeed. Why? Because we’ve just stumbled upon the most utterly divine range of clothes for little girls. And it’s all rather incredibly made – believe it or not – from old men’s shirts!
Of course, we don’t for a second mean “smelly old man” old. Rather, these are Oxford cast-offs that were destined for the rag bag before US designer Kiki Fluhr got her gloriously talented mitts on them and upcycled them into incredibly covetable dresses, skirts, blouses and rompers.
Her sublime Spring 2010 collection for little girls is an eclectic mix of vintage and modern sophistication that belies all the obvious fashion rules but somehow still just works. Take a long, envious look at The Measure range for yourself and you’ll see why we’re so completely smitten.
We love, love, love the 50s-esque sunsuits for babies. There’s something intrinsically adorable about the sweet butterfly suit (pictured top) with its spotty ruffled bottom. The bold black and white styling of the chevron stripe sunsuit (pictured top right) is a knock-out, pure and simple. The pattern repeats in The Measure’s signature tunic-style sundresses, which come in various other designs, all lovely. And oh how we adore the range of circle skirts, especially when worn over contrasting frilled petticoats.
Most items – apart from the baby rompers – come in sizes to fit from six months to six years, with plenty of “growing” room. This means frocks can be conveniently worn for several seasons, first as a dress, then as a tunic and later still as a top.
If you need more reason to fall in love, then consider this. Kiki is happy to custom-make pieces from shirts belonging to the special grown-ups in your daughter’s life. A sundress made from one of dad’s old favourites? What a gorgeous idea!
