There are two things I love about Net-A-Porter. First and foremost, it’s the fabulous fashion. Who doesn’t love to browse the virtual designer aisles and dream a little?! Secondly, I love the story behind the site – one of those truly astounding web success stories (it all started in founder Natalie Massenet’s flat in 2000 and by 2010 she had sold to Swiss luxury goods holding company Richemont for $533 million). So guess what’s next for the fashion domain?

In 2009, Massenet announced that Net-A-Porter had bought the domain name, petite-a-porter.com – and we all knew what that meant! But buying a domain name and creating a website are two different things, so what has happened since 2009? Not much until last week, when the managing director of Net-A-Porter, Alison Loehnis, confirmed that a childrenswear website is on its way.

Loehnis recently spoke to Mashable and when asked about what categories Net-A-Porter would be exploring in the future, she said, “We will explore kids. We’ve had petite-a-porter.com registered for some time. I get asked about home all the time — I’ll just leave it out there, say, ‘watch the space.’ Travel, we’re not looking into. But you never know.”

So, kids fashion is a definite yes and it sounds like we can also start dreaming designer homewares.

Unquestionably the world’s premier online luxury fashion retailer, Net-A-Porter offers labels such as Chloé (below), Gucci and Stella McCartney (above), all of which have children’s lines. Fingers crossed they’re all available in a glam one-stop-shop soon – of course, we’ll let you know the moment it happens.

It is no understatement to say that the Babyology team has been crazy with excitement over the opening of the Pottery Barn Kids and Williams-Sonoma empire in Sydney this week. I was the very lucky writer who had the privilege of walking through that space for the first time. And really – wow. It is amazing. Come through for all the details.

Pottery Barn Kids is one of a group of four stores in the Williams-Sonoma chain, and all four of them are opening tomorrow in the Oxford St Mall in Bondi Junction. It is the first time the interiors megastore has opened anywhere outside North America, and it’s happening right in our backyard. The other stores to open are West Elm and Pottery Barn (homewares and furnishings) and Williams-Sonoma (cookware and gourmet goodies for the home cook). I’ll give you some brief details on those three before we get down to the real business of the amazing Pottery Barn Kids.

The first place we visited was Williams-Sonoma. The store is a delight, with an amazing range of not just utensils, table linen, tableware and tools for the home cook, but also appliances, an amazing juice bar (where customers can make a fresh juice while shopping!) and most impressively, an instore cooking school. This is a new innovation for Williams-Sonoma – none of their existing stores have anything like it, so Sydney will be their test kitchen, in a sense! They are aiming for the whole place to have a fun and relaxed environment – like your own kitchen, except there is someone there to help you master the kinds of great techniques that make cooking enjoyable and not a chore.

Next up were West Elm and Pottery Barn, two homewares stores, each with a slightly different emphasis. West Elm was originally a New York-based store, and you can see that influence in their furnishings and accessories. They aim for an eclectic mix of aesthetics, so it’s a little bit vintage, a little bit industrial, and especially, a little bit crafty. In fact, they have a partnership with Etsy (now in its third year), which means that selected items from a range of local Etsy sellers are available in the store. Pottery Barn holds a more classic style of homewares, and for the Australian market this season they have focused significantly on the themes of coast and country. Different areas of the store are devoted to different areas of the home, and the staff are keen to help customers not only to design a room, but even to design and decorate for an event or party.

But let’s be honest – what we really want to know about is Pottery Barn Kids. What a spectacular store it is! Firstly, everything they stock is designed in-house and produced especially for them, so you won’t find it anywhere else. There is furniture (cots, glider chairs, beds, dressers and never-ending storage solutions), amazing co-ordinated linen and bedding, rugs, window treatments and a huge range of high quality toys.

What’s more, Pottery Barn Kids is committed to making the store an enjoyable place to shop. The whole toy range has been selected especially to encourage creative and educational play. The toys are arranged at children’s eye level, and the staff assured us that once the store is open it will be much more chaotic – they expect to see children playing in the area, using the toys and even tucking themselves into the beds – and that’s exactly how PBK like it.

For locals, there will also be a weekly storytime on Tuesday mornings – they’ll pull out all the gorgeous “anywhere chairs” from all over the store (you can see some in the shot below) and set them up so kids can get comfortable while listening to books aloud. Other regular events are on the cards too – seasonal craft, Halloween parades and tea parties are just a taste of what’s coming up.

The actual floor space in the store is much smaller than the kinds of spaces PBK is used to working with in the States. That means that not everything in the range is there to look at, although of course the displays will change regularly. However, it IS all available on the new Pottery Barn Kids website, which went live this morning. What’s more, we have it on good authority that if you go into the store wanting something that is out of stock, they will post it out to you for free when it comes back in.

Customer service seems to be what will really set PBK apart from the pack when it comes to helping you achieve an amazing look in your own home. They have their own design service (as do West Elm and Pottery Barn) and you can come in, or call them and they will sit down with you and design options for your space – absolutely free, and with no obligation to buy any of it at the end. They’ll even send designers out to your house to check out the space with you, if you live in Sydney. This seems to be a great way to start off buying a few statement pieces for the rooms you are decorating, knowing that you are heading towards a totally co-ordinated look, but you can achieve it piece by piece.

Some Babyology readers have asked us if there are plans to open another PBK elsewhere in Australia, and sadly for non-Sydneysiders, at the moment the answer is no, although another West Elm is slated for Melbourne before the end of the year. Apparently Sydney was the location chosen for the first ever store outside of North America purely based on the amount of Sydney-based traffic on the US website! They recognise that Australian shoppers have taken to online shopping in droves, and everything that is available at the new Australian websites will be available for delivery anywhere in Australia.

The US-based Pottery Barn site will no longer accept orders for Australia. And yes, as expected, the prices at the US site are cheaper than the local site. Having looked around all four stores though, I have to say that the prices are really reasonable for the quality and range of furniture and homewares on offer, and compare favourably to other homewares stores in Australia at the moment.

You can get a better idea of prices by going to Pottery Barn Kids and looking around. Moreover, they will ship all of their merchandise to anywhere in Australia, including offshore territories like Norfolk Island! I think we will find that the flat rates they offer for postage (a tiered pricing system dependent not on weight but on how much you have spent) will mean that the range has become more affordable to Australians than it ever was to order it from North America.

Hitting the book shop in search of the very best titles for children? Start here.

The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) 2013 shortlist has just been announced and it’s a star-studded line-up, with lots of Australia’s most well-known children’s authors nominated. There are books about animals – expect frogs, horses, elephants and hens – and books about adventures, trees, suitcases and music lovers.

The CBCA awards include categories for older readers, younger readers, non-fiction books and more. You can see all of the nominations here but we’ll be checking out the six nominations for best picture book and the six nominations for best early childhood titles for 2013.

In the Picture Book category the nominations include titles from much loved authors – Tanglewood by Margaret Wild; Sophie Scott Goes South by Alison Lester; Herman and Rosie by Gus Gordon; A Day to Remember by Jackie French; The Coat by Julie Hunt; and Lightning Jack by Glenda Millard. It’s not nice to play favourites but I did really, really love Herman and Rosie.

There’s plenty of well-known authors in the category for Early Childhood as well. Start with Anna Walker’s gorgeous story about a curious hen in Peggy. Continue the animal theme with Ursula Dubosarsky’s riotous romp with Too Many Elephants in This House and Sue DeGennaro’s The Pros & Cons of Being a Frog.

We’ve reviewed a number of books by Freya Blackwood previously on Babyolgy (most recently The Treasure Box) but this year she has teamed with author Emma Allen to produce a charming story about being different in The Terrible Suitcase.

We love birthdays at Babyology. And this week we’re celebrating a very special birthday indeed – ours!

Cue the streamers and the fancy cake, because Babyology is turning six! That’s right, it’s been six years since we started turning out wonderful posts keeping Australian parents in the know about all things hip and stylish for babies and kids.

Of course, there’s been a few changes along the way since our Managing Editor Mandi Gunsberger kicked things off with a post about Stuffed Toy Storage from Boon, a product that’s still available today. Her one-woman show (with creative input and heaps of technical support and late-night cups of tea from husband Ben) went live in April 2007 and now employs a team of seven writers – Suzi, Nikki, Lexi, Katrina, Anita, Leah and Barbara – and  five support staff – Laura, Sally, Amy, Anjee and Amanda.

But that’s not the only way we’ve grown! Babyology is now officially the number one product-focused parenting site for Australian mums and dads, with a growing contingent of overseas fans too. We’ve given away prizes totalling tens of thousands of dollars, including five-star holidays, designer prams and complete nursery makeovers and we’ve dug deep for charities too. We’re making plenty of new friends and followers on Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter. And every day, for the past six years, we’ve brought you news and details about fabulous finds from all over the world for pregnancy, babies, kids and parents – more than 6500 posts so far and counting!

Do you own a Bugaboo Cameleon3 stroller? Click through to see if this safety recall affects you!

The Bugaboo team are replacing carry handles on specific Cameleon3 stroller models after customer reports of weak carry connectors that join the carry handle to the carry cot or seat.

According to Bugaboo, there is a minimal safety risk and no injuries to infants have been reported, but the potential for carry connectors to break and create a possible falling hazard has prompted the company to announce a voluntary recall. Bugaboo will replace carry handles on certain Cameleon3 strollers with a new, improved model. Owners of affected prams should stop using the old carry handles immediately.

Australian Bugaboo owners can check to see if their stroller is affected and register for a new replacement carry handle here or contact Bugaboo customer service on 02 9091 0322.

Meet the newest chap on the Babyology block, Jarvis!

This little bundle of newborn goodness Jarvis Christopher, entered the world last week and is the newest addition to Babyology writer Suzi’s family. We won’t lie, we’ve been randomly name guessing the whole way along this pregnancy – Suzi is crazy passionate about names so we knew whatever moniker it was that she and her husband would eventually decide on, it would be perfect for this precious darling heart. And perfect it is, Jarvis Christopher is a punchy name and we’ve absolutely no doubt it’s the perfect fit for this little character.

Jarvis has been enveloped in love and adoration by all those that have clapped their eyes on him and it’s easy to see why, he’s already a wee bit of a cheeky monkey – I see that smirk, he knows, oh boy he knows that he has his mummy and daddy wrapped around his tiny finger. With two older brothers leading the pack, it won’t be long before Jarvis will be taking part in their antics in some way or another for sure!

The Babyology team extend a huge congratulations to your beautiful family Suzi, may your days be filled with ridiculously cool (and cute) boyish charm and many helpful hands as you all settle into life as a family of five.

We were lucky enough to be able to grab some more pics of the new Bugaboo Warhol fabrics at the Bugaboo store opening last night in Amsterdam.

The ‘Cars’ fabric is an original design by Bugaboo based on Warhol’s car prints from the 1950s. The ‘Flowers’ set is a reproduction of Warhol’s work ‘Flowers (Red)’, from 1964.

The ‘Flowers’ parasol is also based on Warhol’s collection of work from 1964.

The Flowers and Cars collections include a tailored fabric set for the Bugaboo Cameleon3 and the Bugaboo Donkey ($289). The canopy will be available for the Bugaboo Bee and the Bugaboo Donkey ($189). I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to share this photo of the new Andy Warhol tailored fabrics collection from Bugaboo. The Warhol collection only just launched at the new Bugaboo flagship store in Amsterdam today and whether you have the Bugaboo Bee, Cameleon or Donkey, these will be perfect for your prams.
