It’s 2am. You’re fumbling with your newborn’s growsuit after a middle-of-the-night nappy change. Those snaps are darn tricky at that time of night – I always ended up one button out, leaving a gaping hole near one of baby’s knees and a bunchy bit near the other.

We’re loving the clog craze taking the fashion world by storm right now. Who says our littlest people can’t get in on the act? Available in September from Red Nest, are these exquisite patent leather Ugglebo clogs from Sweden. I’m in love with the sunny yellow pair but the blue and pink are just as delightful. The company has been making clogs for more than seventy-five years so they really know what they’re doing.

While you could never describe these clogs as dainty, they would pair up beautifully with most girls’ outfits, even with pretty dresses. I’m really going to enjoy seeing my friend’s daughters clomping around in theses beauties all summer long.

I am a complete lover of vintage and retro inspired clothing for my daughter. If it resembles clothing design and an aesthetic from the 50s or 60s, I’m the first in line to buy it – or covet it.

When my first daughter was born, my Mum gave her the softest, warmest pair of little cream-coloured leggings. They weren’t cheap but lasted most of her first year and went on to be worn by my second daughter. They were made from Australian merino wool and that was my first encounter with the wonderful fibre that makes these beautiful products.

The wait is finally over. For those of us who’ve loved it from afar, who’ve jealously lusted after the international purchases of loved ones, the gap between the haves and have nots is closed now that Gap is officially open in Australia.

There’s been an incredible buzz surrounding the opening of the flagship Melbourne store at Chadstone Shopping Centre and the city’s fashion elite scrambled for a coveted place at last night’s launch party.

Of course, Babyology was high on the invite list and amid much fanfare, we were given a sneak peek late yesterday through the doors of the iconic American label, known for being both fashion forward and budget conscious.

We may be the last continent on Earth to get our own Gap store but it’s been worth the wait.

An entire floor of the one thousand two hundred square metre, double storey shop has been dedicated to an adorable abundance of all things denim for little people.

There are of course jeans… the comfy, hard wearing denim that kicked off the Gap brand forty-one years ago, as well as denim shorts, vests, skirts and shirts.

But there’s also every type of accessory you can think of to complement denim. From the fuchsia pink, candy striped and kaleidoscope coloured dresses starting at $59.95, to the earthy-toned, orange accented boys gear, which I’m assured by the friendly staff, is built to last.

And to finish the look, choose from dozens of pairs of gorgeous shoes, sunnies and hats (my personal favourite is the laid-back but super cool straw hat).

But Gap isn’t just about fantastic jeans.

As we become stranded between two fashion seasons, Gap has our kids covered, with winter woollies, jumpers and jackets mixing it on the shelves with the most adorable bathers, shorts and t-shirts.

And of course, there’s the traditional GAP zip up hoodie, starting at the teeniest, tiniest size right up to fourteen years and over, from $39.95.

Of course, a floor of the new store features adult clothing but almost every person at last night’s launch couldn’t help but gravitate towards the kids and babies level.

New European labels never seen before in this part of the world are arriving at Red Nest! This progressive kids’ fashion boutique keeps coming up with the goods and we have the heads up on French label BOdeBO which will be in store from September.

Minimalist, functional and ultimately stylish, BOdeBO has a distinctly playful bent for active kids who like to look good. The collection displays architectural genius in the fall of the garments which allow full movement. This collection makes me want to be a little girl all over again – it’s girly without being prissy, twirly without being frilly. It’s easy to become weary of the usual humdrum of children’s tees. I love these music themed shirts, right down to the one with a vinyl record player. Parents be warned, your children are sure to ask what that strange piece of equipment is!

Playtime or party time, here’s a label which delivers preppy-cool clothes for the two to eight set. It’s not often that the Babyology writers fight amongst themselves but when the invitation to the launch of Gap in Australia landed, we all wanted the opportunity to attend.

No more cramming the suitcases full of fabulous Gap denim, hoodies and tees on trips back from the US – the wait is over for Aussies. Gap opens its flagship Australian store at Chadstone shopping centre next Thursday (August 26). To the excitement of Melburnians, the store will be one thousand two hundred square metres of Gap joy, showcasing the full collections for adults, kids and babies.

Doors are set to open at 9am with various in-store activities  throughout the day, including lucky shopper prizes and entertainment. Register at Gap Australia for all the news and details of special shopping events.

Boys clothing can often be a bit on the nondescript side so we welcome with open arms designers that focus on lifting that image. Imagine my excitement when I see an LA designer so passionate about boy’s clothes that she has developed a whole collection – just for boys!

A mother to two boys, I have the dreaded task of shopping for their clothes and it always depresses me that there’s not the same amount of clothing options in the stores for them as there is for my daughter.

LA designer Esther Marie is the talent behind funky new Captain Monkey collection for boys. The style is hip and urban cool with a dash of preppy thrown in. It’s cool, it’s suave and I think mothers will love it.

It’s very easy to get sidetracked in my line of work. I know I’m supposed to be focusing on stuff for children but I get distracted by things such as ballet style slippers that are like eiderdowns for your feet. I need some of those… terrific! They also come in kid’s sizes.

According to the hype, Blu Moose are a ‘cult slipper brand’ and I can understand why. Blu Moose slippers are made of feather and down – could there be anything toastier for little feet?!

Created by Melburnian Natasha Wells, the slippers were inspired by Swedish dun sockar (doona socks). There are lots of designs to choose from but I think the ‘Mixed Sweets’ pattern, channelling the neon brights of the eighties, is the way to go.

I’m loving the layered look for children and see no reason why little girls can’t wear their gorgeous sun frocks all year round. As the weather changes from bright, sunny days to cooler, darker days it’s fun to still wear bright colours!

Handmade right here in Australia, the funky and fabulous Frankie Rose dresses have me feeling bright and cheery at the idea of bursts of colour on a dreary day. I love the look of the lime green Dotty Dress (pictured above right) teamed with black jeans and a long sleeve top. The Smock Dress (above left) is undeniably cute with its tie waist detail, it screams to be teamed with leggings.

Our never-ending quest to bring you the most amazing things for babies and kids may take us all around the world but so often it happens that the very best finds are made right here in our own backyard. That’s certainly the case with the recently hatched and rather gorgeous mini-fashion label, Sissy & Bro.

Of course, I’ve fallen head over heels for this retro-inspired range for little boys and girls after stumbling across it at a makers’ market in my inner Melbourne hometown of Brunswick recently. A new label from the altogether too-talented Mary Martin, Sissy & Bro is vintage cool with a huge dash of street cred thrown in for little inner-city dwellers like my lot.

I adore the Sundae Delight skirt (pictured top) in ways I never thought possible about a mere piece of clothing. The red and white spot pockets are utterly adorable and the denim back panel makes for clever winter wear when paired with tights. Like all Sissy & Bro skirts, this one comes with a matching flower brooch that can be attached to any top or jacket for a perfect coordinating outfit.

It’s not only the A-line skirts that make me want to rush out and dress my little girl from head to toe in Mary’s designs. The caps are equally stunning and just as covetable. It’s tough being the baby in a family with older siblings. Naptime never lasts long enough because of the noise. Hand-me-downs are a fact of life. I must admit I never really cared for the Narnia Chronicles as a kid – you know, the classic children’s series of books that begin with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. But suddenly I can’t wait to introduce my own brood to the over-the-top fantasy realm of Narnia where lions talk, white queens plot, centaurs rally and children rule the world. I had a close-up look at the range yesterday at the Kids Instyle trade show in Melbourne and I can’t begin to tell you how much I adore it! Beautiful knits in the finest Merino wool, fancy skirts with layer upon layer of frothy tulle or ruffles and stunning dresses are just the start.

All the pieces – including those you see in these exclusive-to-Babyology pictures – are named after characters from the original Narnia tales or the ensuing movies. So there’s the Trumpkin grandpa tees, in a new green-pink striped combination for girls or with super sophisticated black and grey striped sleeves for boys (above). There’s the Saskia Ruffle Skirt (below left), with its divine frou-frou layers and vintage pink overskirt, and the fantastical pretty in pink Priscilla Tutu (above right) with contrasting ric rac trim.

The Aslan vest, a fine Merino knit in multi-coloured stripes (below right), is my favourite boys’ piece, closely followed by the achingly soft Aslan Cardy  (pictured at top). The Oreius tees, in their divine stripes, are also made from Merino for warmth without weight. And I can’t wait to get my hands on the cuter-than-cute unisex Edmund Cord Shorts. Magical!

Of course, this wouldn’t be Heavenly Creatures without smocking or Lu-lu leggins. They’ll both be back next winter, with pink spotted and cream jacquard frill-bottomed leggings to sit alongside the usual stripes. Babu creates some of the softest and most amazing clothes and accessories for our little ones. I love bright colours and my kids often dress in bright coloured clothing, but there is something about a newborn baby in pastels that makes me smile.
