It’s 2am. You’re fumbling with your newborn’s growsuit after a middle-of-the-night nappy change. Those snaps are darn tricky at that time of night – I always ended up one button out, leaving a gaping hole near one of baby’s knees and a bunchy bit near the other.

Midnight growsuit fumbles are a thing of the past with clever new designs from Red Snapper and Magnificent Baby. Redsnapper onesies were designed by parents who, like me, had one too many ‘mis-snap’ moments. All the Redsnapper onesies have a red snap in the middle of the fastenings so you’ll be right on target every time. The designs are seriously cute – I like all the chocolate brown and pink for girls and the irresistible blue and yellow retro robot for boys. Prices start at US$16.99 and Redsnapper ship to Australia.

Magnificent Baby have replaced the hard-to-line-up snaps with a revolutionary magnetic fastening system – easy-to-align magnets are sewn into the seams of the growsuits so getting baby dressed takes only seconds (in fact the magnetic fasteners practically close themselves). Put safety concerns to rest with the knowledge that the magnets used are too large for an infant to swallow and that the closure system has passed the US industry standard small parts swallowing test. In addition, the metal contains no lead or phthalates. All the clothing can be machine-washed and tumble dried and there is a great range of styles including gowns, kimono tops, growsuits and coordinated accessories. Magnetic suits start at US$28 and are available directly from Magnificent Baby who ship to Australia.

We’re loving the clog craze taking the fashion world by storm right now. Who says our littlest people can’t get in on the act? Available in September from Red Nest, are these exquisite patent leather Ugglebo clogs from Sweden. I’m in love with the sunny yellow pair but the blue and pink are just as delightful. The company has been making clogs for more than seventy-five years so they really know what they’re doing.

While you could never describe these clogs as dainty, they would pair up beautifully with most girls’ outfits, even with pretty dresses. I’m really going to enjoy seeing my friend’s daughters clomping around in theses beauties all summer long.

There are health benefits to wearing wooden clogs as they draw sweat away from the foot. Let’s hope this makes for a less stinky summer as they’ll want to live in these all day every day. Little feet will also breathe easy in the heat with the beautiful hole detailing in the top of the shoe.

Ugglebo clogs come in Euro sizes 27 to 35 and will retail for $87. Grab a pair from Red Nest, then take a look at our past editorial on other Red Nest labels.

I am a complete lover of vintage and retro inspired clothing for my daughter. If it resembles clothing design and an aesthetic from the 50s or 60s, I’m the first in line to buy it – or covet it.

That’s why I’m over the moon with the brand new Australian clothier Dear Charlotte, Love Banjo (such a wonderful moniker). Perth-based design duo Sally Roberts and Emerald Leach are the masterminds behind the exclusive, limited-run 50s inspired clothing for babies.

From newborn to size one, the small range includes divine floral and pastel blue dresses for the girls and stunning blue overalls and onesies for the boys. Their ‘Everyday Heirlooms’ range says it all: it’s heirloom quality clothing with a modern touch but doesn’t have to be reserved for special occasions. They can be worn every day!

Now if only they made clothing for bigger kids. I’m wishing and crossing fingers. The online shop for Dear Charlotte, Love Banjo will be up and running in early September so prepare your keyboard to do some purchasing.

This is one for your wishlist so you can come back and purchase when the store has launched.

When my first daughter was born, my Mum gave her the softest, warmest pair of little cream-coloured leggings. They weren’t cheap but lasted most of her first year and went on to be worn by my second daughter. They were made from Australian merino wool and that was my first encounter with the wonderful fibre that makes these beautiful products.

Little Bonbon is a brand new Australian company designing gorgeous 100 per cent superfine Aussie merino wool baby items. Choose from a selection of soft and silky blankets, onesies, sleepwear and the cutest beanies.

What’s great about merino wool is that not only is it toasty warm in winter, the oh-so natural fibre is great for keeping baby cool in the hot days of summer too. You do need to take care when you wash it but I found it doesn’t need washing nearly as often as cotton – simply air your merino wool garment or blanket regularly in the sun.

With prices starting at $12.95 for a beanie, short-sleeved onesies at $27.95 and blankets at $46.95, these are really reasonable. Tempted? Check out Little Bonbon’s website for full details.

The wait is finally over. For those of us who’ve loved it from afar, who’ve jealously lusted after the international purchases of loved ones, the gap between the haves and have nots is closed now that Gap is officially open in Australia.

There’s been an incredible buzz surrounding the opening of the flagship Melbourne store at Chadstone Shopping Centre and the city’s fashion elite scrambled for a coveted place at last night’s launch party.

Of course, Babyology was high on the invite list and amid much fanfare, we were given a sneak peek late yesterday through the doors of the iconic American label, known for being both fashion forward and budget conscious.

We may be the last continent on Earth to get our own Gap store but it’s been worth the wait.

An entire floor of the one thousand two hundred square metre, double storey shop has been dedicated to an adorable abundance of all things denim for little people.

There are of course jeans… the comfy, hard wearing denim that kicked off the Gap brand forty-one years ago, as well as denim shorts, vests, skirts and shirts.

But there’s also every type of accessory you can think of to complement denim. From the fuchsia pink, candy striped and kaleidoscope coloured dresses starting at $59.95, to the earthy-toned, orange accented boys gear, which I’m assured by the friendly staff, is built to last.

And to finish the look, choose from dozens of pairs of gorgeous shoes, sunnies and hats (my personal favourite is the laid-back but super cool straw hat).

But Gap isn’t just about fantastic jeans.

As we become stranded between two fashion seasons, Gap has our kids covered, with winter woollies, jumpers and jackets mixing it on the shelves with the most adorable bathers, shorts and t-shirts.

And of course, there’s the traditional GAP zip up hoodie, starting at the teeniest, tiniest size right up to fourteen years and over, from $39.95.

Of course, a floor of the new store features adult clothing but almost every person at last night’s launch couldn’t help but gravitate towards the kids and babies level.

Gap Chadstone officially opens to the public today, with a second store scheduled to open in Sydney in October.

And an apology in advance if there’s a shortage of stock in the size one boys’ section at Chadstone but I just couldn’t resist buying a new wardrobe for my little man!

New European labels never seen before in this part of the world are arriving at Red Nest! This progressive kids’ fashion boutique keeps coming up with the goods and we have the heads up on French label BOdeBO which will be in store from September.

Minimalist, functional and ultimately stylish, BOdeBO has a distinctly playful bent for active kids who like to look good. The collection displays architectural genius in the fall of the garments which allow full movement. The blue and white Loro dress (above left) is also available in green (above right), with the Caro dress shown in black below next to the pink Pola dress.

This collection makes me want to be a little girl all over again – it’s girly without being prissy, twirly without being frilly. We love the Topo top and pants (below) for their flowy and totally cool structure. Buy from Red Nest from September. Liking those gorgeous clogs? Well, we have another exclusive coming up about those so stay tuned!

It’s easy to become weary of the usual humdrum of children’s tees. I love these music themed shirts, right down to the one with a vinyl record player. Parents be warned, your children are sure to ask what that strange piece of equipment is!

Frustrated at what was on offer for children, Melbourne-based dynamic duo Clare Goodwin and rock band drummer dad Michael Barclay formed A.minor and set about creating fabulous music themed tees perfect for tots inclined to rock it out.

Each design is screen printed by hand on organic cotton tees, producing a fantastic graphic top worthy of any music fan. Everyone can be decked out in these funky threads too. Kids’ sizing starts at 00 right through to size 12. A.minor have also launched teen and adult sizes so the whole family can be in sync.

Long sleeve tees, tank tops, bodysuits and tees ensure A.minor can be worn all year round. A great gift for parents that are musically inclined and for those who aren’t, you can choose tees printed with trains, horses, cowboys and even gorgeous umbrella-toting ladies. I love the record player tee (pictured top) though!

Prices start at $24.95. A.minor are available locally at Violet Pilot in Fremantle, Western Australia and Maternal Instinct in Geelong, Victoria or via email. Keep an eye on their website as the A.minor online store will be launching soon!

It’s not often that the Babyology writers fight amongst themselves but when the invitation to the launch of Gap in Australia landed, we all wanted the opportunity to attend.

No more cramming the suitcases full of fabulous Gap denim, hoodies and tees on trips back from the US – the wait is over for Aussies. Gap opens its flagship Australian store at Chadstone shopping centre next Thursday (August 26). To the excitement of Melburnians, the store will be one thousand two hundred square metres of Gap joy, showcasing the full collections for adults, kids and babies.

Doors are set to open at 9am with various in-store activities throughout the day, including lucky shopper prizes and entertainment. Register at Gap Australia for all the news and details of special shopping events.

Needless to say, Babyology will most certainly be covering the opening of Gap in Australia, so check back here next week for the full story.

A second Gap store is expected to open in Westfield Sydney at the end of October.

Boys clothing can often be a bit on the nondescript side so we welcome with open arms designers that focus on lifting that image. Imagine my excitement when I see an LA designer so passionate about boy’s clothes that she has developed a whole collection – just for boys!

A mother to two boys, I have the dreaded task of shopping for their clothes and it always depresses me that there’s not the same amount of clothing options in the stores for them as there is for my daughter.

LA designer Esther Marie is the talent behind funky new Captain Monkey collection for boys. The style is hip and urban cool with a dash of preppy thrown in. It’s cool, it’s suave and I think mothers will love it.

Captain Monkey caters for sizes two through to sixteen. The range includes beautiful dress shirts in traditional but colourful striped fabrics. Shirts with small bat prints are also available and fun to wear. There are plenty of gorgeous graphic tees to be had along with jeans. For something special, there are cool blazers to provide an extra layer during cooler months.

Shirts start from US$46 from Saige Nicole’s, with delivery to Australia available.

With so many neat new gadget releases plus more products than ever to suit the new dad, this Father’s Day is set to be the best ever for dads or dads-to-be! In recognition of the fabulous dads out there, we’ve picked the cream of the crop from this year’s most desirable releases to make a giftlist to die for.

Don’t forget to add this article to your Wishlist so you can revisit at purchasing (or hinting-to-partner) time. Whether the budget is limited or not, we’ve got something for every groovy dad!

Gadgetry and geekery

The recent release of Apple’s iPad (pictured top) will ensure this nifty gadget is at the top of many daddy dream lists. It starts at $629 from the Apple Store.

Similarly, the iPhone 4 will be the choice of early-adopting, Apple-loving dads. Prices start at $859 from the Apple Store.

Treat dad to a high-tech pair of wireless headphones (top right) – now the rest of the house doesn’t have to listen to endless re-runs of dad’s favourite show! These ones are by Sennheiser and you can buy them for $449 from Minidisc. Shipping is free if it’s your first order.

Mindstorms not suiting the budget this year?
Grab one of these great projection clocks from Oregon Scientific. The Daylight Projection Clock ($179.99, above right) projects clearly even in the middle of the day, while the Retro Radio Projection Clock ($84.99, above left) will satisfy a vintage buff who likes his mod cons. Both clocks ship for free! Alternatively, go for a super-luxe maple TOCA Clock ($250) from Via Alley.

He might be the kind of dad who invests himself in making his kids as knowledgeable as he is. In that case, he’ll need Geek Dad, a book of projects for the next generations of geeklets. It’s $27.95 from Borders. To top off this nerdy roundup, you’ll be wanting that extra polish on the gift with a vintage Ladybird book cover for his card. The ‘How it works’ The Computer card is $5.95 from Lark.

Bags and Carriers

Get dad one of these gorgeous leather bags for Father’s Day and you’ll find he’ll be using it after baby is out of nappies! He’ll love the rounded elegance of the Bugaboo (RED) Limited Edition Bag available in black and white from Minimee for $349.95 each. Also stunningly stylish are the Storksak Jamie bags available for $309.95 each from Minimee in black and brown.

New dads just love to show off their brand new offspring so here are two carriers to suit those outdoorsy types without compromising aesthetics. The JoinUs backpack (above left) has a neat sun or rain shade and suits babies and toddlers up to two-and-a-half. It’s $245 from MetroMum.

Also look at the Baby Bjorn Organic Active Carrier (above right) for $219.95 from Eco Child. Beep Beep Slings (below) is now producing its own original textiles – he’ll love the new reversible Elm design for $142 with free postage.

Other bits and bobs

Well well, what have we got here? Far from the predictable socks and undies, here is a selection dad will swoon over. I admit to buying the black Thorbolt Danefae Viking Tee (above top left) for my husband… along with two mini-sized Viking tees for our sons. It’s among his favourites and his eye is on the Green Stripes version too. They’re $49.95 each from Baby Goes Retro.

Got an interior decorating whizz for a partner? Appartements de Garcons (above top right) is a lush book to inspire and fascinate with perfectly-designed apartments put together by Parisian men. It’s $37.50 from Lark, along with that fab retro Raleigh BMX Flight Bag for $79.95. Those pre-baby jitters can be soothed with a Beer and Bubs session ($50 including a meal) at various locations around Australia. What he’ll learn there about what not to say during labour may just be helping you out too. The morning after those few beers, he’ll be needing a good strong coffee in his eco-friendly Keepcup, from $12 to $16 in small, medium and large sizes.
It’s very easy to get sidetracked in my line of work. I know I’m supposed to be focusing on stuff for children but I get distracted by things such as ballet style slippers that are like eiderdowns for your feet. I need some of those… terrific! They also come in kid’s sizes.

According to the hype, Blu Moose are a ‘cult slipper brand’ and I can understand why. Blu Moose slippers are made of feather and down – could there be anything toastier for little feet?!

Created by Melburnian Natasha Wells, the slippers were inspired by Swedish dun sockar (doona socks). There are lots of designs to choose from but I think the ‘Mixed Sweets’ pattern, channelling the neon brights of the eighties, is the way to go.

Choose between a lightweight sole (so that you don’t have to take them off in bed) or a hard EVA sole (suitable for wearing outside), the slippers are also machine washable. I’m wondering if I can get away with wearing a pair of Mixed Sweets to school drop-off in the same way that celebs are seen out-and-about in their Uggs?

Slippers and boots are available directly from Blu Moose. Children’s boots are $24.95 and women’s and men’s boots are $49.95. Ballet ‘slippers’ for mums are $29.95.

I’m loving the layered look for children and see no reason why little girls can’t wear their gorgeous sun frocks all year round. As the weather changes from bright, sunny days to cooler, darker days it’s fun to still wear bright colours!

Our never-ending quest to bring you the most amazing things for babies and kids may take us all around the world but so often it happens that the very best finds are made right here in our own backyard. That’s certainly the case with the recently hatched and rather gorgeous mini-fashion label, Sissy & Bro.

Of course, I’ve fallen head over heels for this retro-inspired range for little boys and girls after stumbling across it at a makers’ market in my inner Melbourne hometown of Brunswick recently. A new label from the altogether too-talented Mary Martin, Sissy & Bro is vintage cool with a huge dash of street cred thrown in for little inner-city dwellers like my lot.

I adore the Sundae Delight skirt (pictured top) in ways I never thought possible about a mere piece of clothing. The red and white spot pockets are utterly adorable and the denim back panel makes for clever winter wear when paired with tights. Like all Sissy & Bro skirts, this one comes with a matching flower brooch that can be attached to any top or jacket for a perfect coordinating outfit.

It’s not only the A-line skirts that make me want to rush out and dress my little girl from head to toe in Mary’s designs. The caps are equally stunning and just as covetable. Made from soft flannels, cords and other fabrics sourced here and overseas, they come in snug, fully-lined winter weights or lighter options for warmer weather.

Sissy & Bro have plenty of other droolicious skirt designs, with more coming in their pending spring range but if you want the Ella in the Park skirt (pictured below), you’ll have to toss me for it because I saw it first!

While the photos here show you how eye-catching the designs are, what they can’t show you is how carefully each piece is crafted. Mary sews every single item herself and the quality of her work is superlative, right down to the smallest thing she makes like her darling bibs and the hard-to-find hair ties on itty-bitty elastics that are perfect for fine toddler hair.

The collection is starting to creep into boutiques in Victoria and Queensland or you can order your fill of this fabulous new find direct from Sissy & Bro. Caps start at $29.50 and skirts from $34.50, with delivery across Australia.

It’s tough being the baby in a family with older siblings. Naptime never lasts long enough because of the noise. Hand-me-downs are a fact of life. And tiny little mitts get terribly cold during the inescapable winter school run. What’s a baby brother or baby sister to do? Get some fabulous Merino mittens from Uimi, that’s what!

I’d certainly feel less guilty about dragging my own baby into the cold each day for school drop-offs and pick-ups if his hands were ensconced in a pair of these darling little Beci mittens. And happy day, they even come in sizes to fit his two-year-old sister! No more freezing cold mitts for my tots while traipsing after their big brother.

Made from superfine and super soft Merino wool right here in Melbourne, the colour choices in the Beci are as delightful as the mittens themselves – poppy, apple, fairyfloss , daffodil, cloud and silver among them. The Beci mitten comes in two sizes – one to fit older babies and toddlers and the other to fit children aged between two and four. Uimi have added a clever string to keep the mittens together – just thread them through the sleeves of your child’s jacket and they can be taken on and off without getting lost.

Uimi also has a range of lovely hats for babies and children to keep little heads as toasty warm as little hands. The Giles cap, a blend of Merino and organic cotton, comes in baby and kids’ sizes. The terribly sweet Mimi bonnet in pure Merino wool is just for bubs while kids can also choose the classic jersey Ike beanie in a Merino-organic cotton blend.

Scarves along with wraps, mittens and booties for newborns are also available, with products priced from a very affordable $25. You can find a list of Uimi stockists, including the lovely Mulberry Tree Organic online store, here.

I must admit I never really cared for the Narnia Chronicles as a kid – you know, the classic children’s series of books that begin with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. But suddenly I can’t wait to introduce my own brood to the over-the-top fantasy realm of Narnia where lions talk, white queens plot, centaurs rally and children rule the world. Welcome to winter Heavenly Creatures’ style!

Last week we brought you the upcoming spring/ summer collection from this beautiful children’s label, with its Peter Pan-inspired theme. Now just take a look at what supreme design duo Heidi Weber and Kelly Duckworth have in store for next winter!

I had a close-up look at the range yesterday at the Kids Instyle trade show in Melbourne and I can’t begin to tell you how much I adore it! Beautiful knits in the finest Merino wool, fancy skirts with layer upon layer of frothy tulle or ruffles and stunning dresses are just the start.

All the pieces – including those you see in these exclusive-to-Babyology pictures – are named after characters from the original Narnia tales or the ensuing movies. So there’s the Trumpkin grandpa tees, in a new green-pink striped combination for girls or with super sophisticated black and grey striped sleeves for boys (above). There’s the Saskia Ruffle Skirt (below left), with its divine frou-frou layers and vintage pink overskirt, and the fantastical pretty in pink Priscilla Tutu (above right) with contrasting ric rac trim.

The Aslan vest, a fine Merino knit in multi-coloured stripes (below right), is my favourite boys’ piece, closely followed by the achingly soft Aslan Cardy (pictured at top). The Oreius tees, in their divine stripes, are also made from Merino for warmth without weight. And I can’t wait to get my hands on the cuter-than-cute unisex Edmund Cord Shorts. Magical!

Of course, this wouldn’t be Heavenly Creatures without smocking or Lu-lu leggins. They’ll both be back next winter, with pink spotted and cream jacquard frill-bottomed leggings to sit alongside the usual stripes. There’s two stunning smocked dresses – the denim Lucy (below right) and the Jadis (above left) with its exquisite vintage fabric detailing.

Like what you see? You’re in for a wait – this is an autumn/ winter 2011 collection after all and won’t be in stores until next year. But don’t worry – we’ll certainly let you know when it’s available. Keep your eye on Heavenly Creatures’ site too for more details of the new range.
